If you’re planning a trip to Lake Garda and wondering whether Riva del Garda or Malcesine is the better choice, you’re in the right place!
We’ve been lucky enough to visit Lake Garda three times now, and honestly, it became one of our favorite places in all of Italy—right up there with Venice, Milan, and Florence.
Lake Garda completely stole our hearts.
Nothing prepared us for how vibrant, colorful, and full of life Malcesine and Riva del Garda were. Every walk felt like a scene from a postcard, with sparkling waters, medieval castles, and a backdrop of soaring mountains.
Lake Garda is easily one of the most stunning lakes we’ve ever seen.
But here’s the thing—deciding between staying in Malcesine or Riva del Garda wasn’t easy, and a burning question for us.
Whether you’re a couple looking for a romantic getaway, a family planning your next adventure, or you’re squeezing in a day or two while exploring northern Italy, choosing where to base yourself can be tricky.
When we were planning our first trip, we struggled to find clear, up-to-date comparisons.
So after several incredible visits to both towns, we put together this detailed guide to help you decide which one is right for you.
This guide covers how to choose the perfect Lake Garda base, where to stay, and what to do—so you can start planning your perfect Lake Garda trip!
Malcesine or Riva Del Garda?

Choosing between Malcesine and Riva del Garda really comes down to what kind of trip you’re after. If you’re traveling as a couple looking for romance, charming old-world streets to wander, a slow pace la dolce vita vibe, and stunning lake views, Malcesine will steal your heart.
But if you’re planning a family getaway, with plenty of lakeside beach time, resort amenities, more space, easy strolls, and activities that keep kids entertained, Riva del Garda is a fantastic choice.
Let’s dive into what makes each town perfect for families or couples so you can decide which fits your vibe best.

Malcesine: Best for Couples

Malcesine might just steal your heart (as it did ours!) if you’re looking for a romantic getaway.
The town is ancient in the best way possible—cobbled alleys, stone archways, and buildings that feel like you’ve transported back in time.
As a couple, we absolutely loved exploring the town of Malcesine—so much so that we ended up walking through it six different times in a single trip.
Early mornings, when the streets were still quiet and the lake mirrored the pastel skies, and late at night, when the town felt like our own private fairytale.
There are some places that just transport you to another time, and make your heart happy. Malcesine is one of them.
One of our favorite experiences was climbing Castello Scaligero right when it opened at 9am.

The views from the tower were unreal—layers of mountains, sparkling lake, birds soaring and gliding right next to the castle, and the rooftops of Malcesine glowing in the morning light. More on what to do in Malcesine later below.

Riva del Garda: Best for Families

Riva del Garda is a better pick for families. The town is flatter, bigger, more spacious, and just feels easier to navigate—especially if you’ve got strollers, scooters, or little ones in tow.
The beachfront and old town area are both family-friendly and walkable, with wide promenades, shaded benches, and plenty of room to roam. There are casual restaurants, gelato spots on every corner, and even playgrounds right by the lake.
The beachfront here is probably one of the most beautiful lake views we’ve ever seen—with crystal clear waters framed by dramatic mountains on both sides, and colorful Riva dotting the shoreline like a watercolor painting!

The hotels and resorts in this area are spacious, and also have more amenities for families like pools, bike rentals, and spacious rooms.
When we visited, the waves at the beach in Riva were also noticeably calmer than Malcesine, which made it feel a bit safer for young swimmers—though of course, this can vary depending on the day.
You’ll also find more bike rental shops, family-friendly hikes, and outdoor activities here. Riva makes things easy and fun. More on what to do in Riva below.
Riva del Garda or Malcesine for Both Adventure Lovers and Cycling

Both Riva del Garda and Malcesine are fantastic bases for outdoor adventures, especially if you’re into cycling or watersports.
If you’re dreaming of riding an e-bike lakeside and passing through colorful old towns for hours, Malcesine is the winner.
You can rent your bike from Active Bike Store, conveniently located right across from the entrance to town. From there, hop on the scenic lakefront bike path to Pai—our favorite bike route in Italy and in our opinion, one of the most beautiful cycling routes in the world!
The ride takes you past crystal-clear waters, through charming villages, and includes plenty of scenic cafés to stop for espresso or aperitivo. Alternatively, you can head south to Navene for another lovely ride.
We absolutely loved the freedom of gliding along the lake with the breeze in our hair and no set itinerary—just endless beauty and the occasional gelato break.
Riva del Garda for Windsurfing and Mountain Biking

Riva del Garda, on the other hand, is the better base for mountain biking and windsurfing, and named as one of the best places in Italy for adventure seekers.
The legendary Ponale Trail, which begins right in Riva, offers jaw-dropping views of the lake as it winds toward Lake Ledro. For bike rentals, Happy Bike is a solid choice with quality equipment and friendly staff.
You can still mountain bike in Malcesine, but most trails start higher up on Monte Baldo. To get there, you’ll need to take the Monte Baldo Cable Car (€25 round trip for adults, plus €5 to bring your bike).
The ride up is half the fun—it’s one of the steepest rotating cable cars in the world, and we loved the sweeping 360° views of the lake and surrounding peaks.
Once at the top, you can access a variety of hiking and biking trails, or simply soak in the views.
As for windsurfing, Riva del Garda is the winner and famous for its consistent winds called as Ora breeze. When we visited, the lake was full of surfers catching the breeze, flipping and racing across the water—it was incredible to watch!
You can book rentals or lessons at top-rated spots like Surf Segnana or Sailing Du Lac, both located right on the lakefront.
Where to Stay in Malcesine and Riva del Garda
By now, hopefully you’ve got a clearer idea of which town suits your vibe best. But here’s a little secret: no matter where you base yourself—Malcesine or Riva del Garda—it’s super easy to visit the other towns around Lake Garda by ferry.
So if you really can’t decide, just pick the one you want to explore early in the morning and enjoy both!
Both towns offer a range of accommodation options, from charming boutique hotels to wellness retreats and family-friendly resorts. Here are some of our favorite places to stay in each town, along with who they’re best for:
Where to Stay in Malcesine
- Hotel Modena — Best for history lovers and those who want to be right in the heart of the old town with easy access to cafes and shops.
- Wellness Hotel Casa Barca (Adult Only) — Best for couples or solo travelers seeking tranquility and wellness, thanks to its spa and peaceful lakeside setting.
- Hotel Excelsior Bay — Best for travelers wanting luxury with modern comforts and stunning lake views in a central location.
- Eco Hotel Ariston — Best for eco-conscious travelers who want sustainability without sacrificing comfort, plus quick access to the Monte Baldo cable car.
Where to Stay in Riva del Garda
- Bellavista Lakefront Hotel — Best for families and beach lovers who want easy access to the lake and a beautiful waterfront promenade.
- Hotel Oasi Wellness & Spa — Best for relaxation seekers looking for a spa retreat after a day of adventure.
- Parc Hotel Flora S — Best for families wanting kid-friendly amenities like a pool and playground, plus spacious rooms.

No matter which hotel you pick, the stunning lake, charming streets, and mountain views will be just outside your door.
And with the ferry network connecting towns along Lake Garda, you can easily explore beyond your base whenever you like!
What to Do in Malcesine

One of our favorite experiences was climbing Castello Scaligero right when it opened at 9am. The views from the tower were unreal—layers of mountains fading into the horizon, the lake shimmering like glass, and birds gliding right next to the ancient stone walls.
Below us, the terracotta rooftops of Malcesine lit up in the golden morning sun. It was pure magic.
This medieval fortress dates back to the 13th century and was once home to the powerful Scaligeri family who ruled Verona and the Lake Garda region.
Our favorite memory in all of Lake Garda was renting e-bikes and cruising from Malcesine to Pai. It was hands down the best thing we did in Lake Garda!

The ride was peaceful, scenic, and full of those moments where you just want to pause, breathe it all in, and never forget it.
We passed through gorgeous lakefront paths, colorful villages with balconies bursting in flowers, and had lake and mountain views the entire time.
We even jumped in a lakeside beach along the way and took a refreshing swim! (the water is freezing but so refreshing!)
The views from Monte Baldo cable car are also amazing. Malcesine itself felt like a dream of joyful Italian La Dolce Vita living.
Each evening, we’d wander the lakefront promenade with a gelato after dinner at Ristorante pizzeria Firenze. It was the kind of peaceful, glowing contentment you only get when you walk through a place that delights your soul.
So pick the place that delights your soul!
What to Do in Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda, on the other hand, gave us that jolt of fresh air and adrenaline. You can feel the energy shift the moment you arrive—this is Lake Garda’s active, sporty side.
Riva del Garda has a different feel—more active, more cosmopolitan, and with a history shaped by its role as a strategic port during Venetian, Austrian, and Italian rule.
You can feel that layered past as you wander through its old town, where pastel buildings wrap around grand piazzas and lakeside promenades.
We loved walking around the harbor in the morning, watching dozens of windsurfers glide across the water as the wind picked up.
Riva is famous for windsurfing, thanks to its unique wind patterns that draw both beginners and pros from all over Europe. If you’re curious to try it out, Surf Segnana and Sailing Du Lac are two of the best-rated spots to rent gear or book a lesson.

One of the most unforgettable things we did here was rent bikes and ride the Ponale Trail, a famous scenic cliffside path that curves dramatically along the mountains above the lake.
Originally built in the mid-1800s as a road connecting Riva to the Ledro Valley, it’s now a breathtaking bike and pedestrian route with tunnels carved into stone, sweeping lake views, and old military fortifications.
We rented bikes from Happy Bike in Riva (super friendly staff!) and rode the cliffside cycle trail that runs from Riva all the way to Lake Ledro up in the mountains, with breathtaking lake views the entire way.
There’s no cycling through colorful town views in the Ponale Trail, like the Malcesine to Pai bike trail though, just pure nature. You can add on biking through Riva del Garda and Torbole before or after your route though.
Riva also has a more alpine feel—it’s surrounded by dramatic cliffs and pine-covered mountains, which makes it an excellent base for hiking and mountain biking.
You can literally roll out of your hotel and hit a biking or hiking trail. Before your trip, make sure to download these best Italy travel apps to make your trip easeful!

Scenery & Vibe: Which Is Prettier?
Honestly? You can’t go wrong with either—both towns are considered the best places to visit in Lake Garda. But if we had to choose based on pure “wow” factor, Malcesine wins for timeless beauty, while Riva del Garda feels more expansive and lively.
Malcesine is that charming postcard town you dream about—narrow cobblestone alleys, pastel buildings draped in bougainvillea, and a fairytale castle perched right on the lake!
Just typing this up makes us say “take me back!”
The way the cliffs and Monte Baldo rise steeply behind the town makes everything feel cozy, vertical, and dramatic. It’s stunning at every turn, especially at golden hour when the light hits the water and mountains just right.
Riva del Garda, on the other hand, has a little bit of everything. There’s are several lovely beaches, a lively old town, large villas, and it’s a hotspot for adventure sports, and hiking.
It’s famous for the Ponale Trail, one of the world’s best mountain biking routes—winding along the cliffs with epic lake views. The bike trail starts right at the tip of Riva.
That said, the main road through Riva—Via Gardesana—is kind of like the Las Vegas of Lake Garda. It’s super touristy, busy, and yes, there are plenty of folks sporting Crocs and casual tourist gear. That wasn’t quite our vibe.
Because it’s so family-friendly and an adventure hub, it attracts a lot of visitors year-round, so you’ll find it buzzing with energy and activity most days.
If you want dramatic, romantic views and a slower pace, Malcesine is your pick.
If you’re into adventure, variety, and don’t mind a bit of hustle and bustle, Riva del Garda delivers on every front.
Either way, you’re surrounded by stunning lake views and mountain backdrops that will take your breath away!
Out of all the Lake Garda towns, these two were our top favorites so you can’t go wrong either way.
FAQs on Riva del Garda or Malcesine
Got questions about choosing Riva del Garda or Malcesine? Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to help you plan your perfect trip!
Which part of Lake Garda is best to stay in?
It really depends on your vibe and what you’re looking for.
The north, like Malcesine and Riva del Garda, is more dramatic with its towering cliffs, alpine views, and adventure sports. It’s perfect if you love being active or want to explore the Dolomites after.
The south, like Sirmione and Desenzano, has more of a Mediterranean, resort-style feel—think Roman ruins, flat bike paths, and lakefront lounging.
We personally loved the north. The scenery is unforgettable, and the towns felt a little more authentic and relaxed once you got off the main roads.
What is the prettiest town around Lake Garda?
We visited several towns, and Malcesine completely stole our hearts.
There’s something incredibly romantic about strolling its cobbled lanes, watching the sun glint off the castle turrets, and sipping aperitivos by the water.
With its pastel buildings, mountain-meets-lake setting, and local charm, Malcesine felt like a postcard come to life.
That said, if you love grand waterfront promenades and majestic views, Riva del Garda is also a strong contender.
Is Malcesine a good base for Lake Garda?
Yes—Malcesine is one of the best bases, especially if you’re planning to explore by ferry.
We loved how easy it was to take day trips to Limone, Riva del Garda, and even towns further south.
The old town has everything you need—cozy restaurants, castle views, small beaches, and a vibrant atmosphere without being overwhelming.
It’s also close to the Monte Baldo cable car, which gives you a gateway to hiking, paragliding, or just panoramic views with a spritz in hand.
Is it worth going to Riva del Garda?
Definitely—especially if you’re into hiking, biking, or water sports.
Riva has this energetic buzz to it and offers a little of everything: beach time, old town charm, and big alpine views.
We rented e-bikes and rode all the way to Torbole and beyond, and it was one of the best things we did on the trip.
However, it’s also more touristy and busy than Malcesine, especially near the main roads—so be prepared for crowds during peak months.
Is Malcesine worth a visit?
Absolutely—it’s our favorite town on the lake.
As a couple, we found it incredibly romantic. Sure, it’s a little hilly in places, but that just adds to the charm.
You’ll find everything from a medieval castle to lakeside walks, and the sunsets here are magical.
Whether you’re sipping wine by the water, climbing Castello Scaligero at opening time, or just getting lost in the alleyways, Malcesine feels like a dream.
Can you swim in the lake at Malcesine?
Yes! And we definitely recommend it on a hot summer day.
The water is fresh, clean, and incredibly clear.
There are a few small beaches and lake access points—some rocky, some grassy—and even during peak season, we found quiet spots to dip in.
Floating in the water with the mountains all around you? It’s pure bliss.
What’s better, Lake Como or Lake Garda?
Ah, the age-old question—and the answer depends on your style.
Lake Como feels more glamorous and exclusive, with grand villas and a slower pace. It’s ideal if you’re after that jet-set, luxury vibe.
Lake Garda, on the other hand, is bigger, more varied, and has something for every type of traveler—families, couples, adventurers, foodies.
We personally preferred Lake Garda. It felt more relaxed and down-to-earth, with endless activities and towns to explore. Lake Garda is often named as Italy’s under-the-radar foodie wonderland.
Plus, it’s easier to get around thanks to the ferry system and flatter roads in the south.
Which side of Lake Garda is more beautiful?
We love the northern part of Lake Garda (Malcesine, Riva del Garda, and Limone), where you get access to both lake and towering mountain views.
We think this is easily one of the most beautiful places in Italy, and could easily visit here on every Lake Garda trip.
The eastern side (Malcesine, Torri del Benaco) is sun-drenched in the mornings and great for views of the western cliffs.
The western side (Limone, Gardone Riviera) has more dramatic landscapes and gets lovely evening light.
But honestly? You can’t go wrong with either side.
We chose to base ourselves in Malcesine on the east and ferry around from there. Every side has its own magic—you just have to discover which one suits you best.
Final Thoughts: Riva or Malcesine for Lake Garda base
We really hope this guide helps you find your perfect spot at Lake Garda! For us, Malcesine and Riva del Garda each hold a special kind of magic—whether it’s the romantic mornings exploring Malcesine’s castle and lakeside paths, or the lively energy of windsurfing and biking around Riva.
Both towns gave us memories we’ll treasure forever, and we’re sure whichever one you choose, you’ll fall in love just the same.
